چکیده

Trickle bed reactors are governed by equations of flow in porous media such as Darcy’s law and the conservation of mass. Our numerical method for solving these equations is based on a total-velocity splitting, sequential formulation which leads to an implicit pressure equation and a semi-implicit mass conservation equation. We use high-resolution finite-difference methods to discretize these equations. Our solution scheme extends previous work in modeling porous media flows in two ways. First, we incorporate physical effects due to capillary pressure, a nonlinear inlet boundary condition, spatial porosity variations, and inertial effects on phase mobilities. In particular, capillary forces introduce a parabolic component into the recast evolution equation, and the inertial effects give rise to hyperbolic nonconvexity. Second, we introduce a modification of the slope-limiting algorithm to prevent our numerical method from producing spurious shocks. We present a numerical algorithm for accommodating these difficulties, show the algorithm is second-order accurate, and demonstrate its performance on a number of simplified problems relevant to trickle bed reactor modeling. c © 2000 Academic Press

Improved numerical simulation of the low temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a trickle bed reactor

Abstract Gas to liquid (GTL) process involves heterogeneous catalytic chemical reactions that convert synthesis gas to hydrocarbons and water vapor. A three phase reactor, called Low temperature Fischer-Tropsch (LTFT) is commonly applied for GTL process. In this reactor the gaseous phase includes the synthesis gas, light hydrocarbons and water vapor, the liquid phase is a mixture of the h...

I Methanol Synthesis in a Trickle Bed Reactor

INTRODUCTION The conversion of synthesis gas to methanol is practiced commercially in gas phase fixed bed reactors over a Cu/Zn/Al,O1 catalyst. However, because of the highly exothermic nature of the synthesis reactions, heat dissipation has been a bottleneck in the reactor design and process configuration. Moreover, coalderived synthesis gas, having a low H,/CO ratio, is not suitable for use i...

DEVELOPMENT OF A PELLET SCALE MODEL FOR TRICKLE BED REACTOR USING CFD TECHNIQUES

In this study, a pellet scale model was developed for trickle bed reactor utilizing CFD techniques. Drag coefficients were calculated numerically at different velocities and bulk porosities in the case of single phase flow through the dry bed. The simulation results were then compared with the prediction of Kozeny-Carman (K-C) equation. The results indicated that drag coefficients calculated fr...
